EI Interview – Arthur Farndell

Arthur Farndell, class 1937, was born in London just before the Second World War. He was an evacuee and then moved to Leicester after the war. Later Cambridge University became his new home, where he took a degree in Modern Languages. After graduating and gaining his certificate in teaching, he began his professional work in London.

Here Arthur met and joined the School of Philosophy in January 1960.  He stated, “That’s what I was looking for”.

He taught in state schools and in private education, and for more than ten years he taught English to overseas students, later giving private lessons in a variety of subjects.

We talked about Self-Love and Self-Care and how they are the very beginning of loving others and being of service, by caring about others too.

What is the path to knowing Yourself and to what degree do You know Yourself?

When You know Yourself, You are more capable of understanding others.

Arthur advised every organisation to care about the people, from the top to the bottom equally, show genuine interest in people’s lives, get connected and consider every human as Yourself.

Know Yourself through others.

What does being a lifelong student mean?

What can we suggest as pathways to those humans who are willing to get to know themselves profoundly?

Calmness, Clarity and Courage: is this a good point from where to start any decision-making process?

We talked about education, teenagers and how it can be beneficial to introduce mindfulness, practical philosophy and broadly self-knowing activities.

It has been a superb conversation on how to improve society, starting from ourselves and spreading to companies and the business-world, how to connect and value humans, and how to empower humans practically, with pathways as adults and education from a very young age:  “the sooner the better”.

The final advice from Arthur is something I won’t spoil. Enjoy the interview!

Arthur, I express once more my gratitude for Your sharing Your wisdom in relation to Emotional Intelligence, intra and inter-personal relationships, a true masterpiece.
